If you are familiar with my blog then you know we have Great Danes. Our current Dane, Magnus, is a super sweet gentle giant. However, he is also a bit spoiled (as all dogs should be!) as he likes a variety of different flavored homemade bones to snack on. So I came up with these Bacon Cheddar Treats and he absolutely devours them every time!

Why make your own dog treats? Because YOU control what goes into every batch. I’m a huge believer that homemade is best made. Not only for us humans but also for our beloved animals.ย These dog treats use real ingredients.ย The natural bacon flavor and fresh cheddar cheese are ingredients your furry friend is going to love.

Ingredients for Bacon Cheddar Dog Treats

Ingredients for Bacon Cheddar Dog Treats which include shredded cheddar cheese, oats, crumbled bacon, whole wheat flour, beaten egg, and applesauce.

Whole wheat flour: 2 cups of whole wheat flour

Old-fashioned oats: 1 cup of old-fashioned oats.

Applesauce: 1/2 cup of unsweetened applesauce. Either homemade or store-bought.

Eggs: 1 large egg beaten.

Bacon: 5 slices of crumbled cooked real bacon, equals about 1/4 cup. Not pre-cooked package bacon which typically has unwanted additives.

Cheddar cheese: 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese.

Depending on the size of your treats this recipe yields 20-40 treats.

How to Make Bacon Cheddar Dog Treats

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper or oil the baking sheet to prevent sticking.
  • In a large mixing, combine the whole wheat flour, old-fashioned oats, bacon and cheddar cheese.
  • In a medium mixing bowl, combine the egg and applesauce.
  • Add the applesauce mixture to the flour mixture and stir to combine.
  • On a floured surface, roll out the dough to about ยผ inch thick. Use a cookie cutter to create fun shapes, such as bones or paws. If you donโ€™t have a dog-themed cutter, simply use an opening of a round glass or use a knife to cut out shapes. The dough will be sticky, add additional flour if needed so that the dough is workable but not stiff. The great thing about dog treats is that if they are not perfectly shaped, your fur baby is NOT going to care one bit!
  • Place treats on prepared baking sheet and place in the preheated oven. Bake for 20 minutes or until golden brown.
  • Cool thoroughly on a wire rack.

Storage

Store these pet treats in an airtight container or ziplock bag in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks. These treats freeze very well. You can store in the freezer for up to 3 months.

Tips

We love making these bacon cheese treats as they are easy and come together super fast.

Substitutions: If your dog has any allergies, you can substitute ingredients like using oat flour instead of wheat flour, or omit the cheddar cheese if your dog is allergic to dairy products.

Batch cooking: These treats freeze very well, so you can make a double batch, freeze them, and thaw as needed.

Pro-tip: I cook the bacon ahead of time and freeze it in a ziplock bag so that it’s ready to use whenever I need to whip up a batch of these treats.
