Ingredients for Homemade Blueberry Pie Recipe

Blueberry pie ingredients in clear glass bowls and two rolled pie crusts to right side of surface.

  • Two 9-inch pie crusts
  • all-purpose flour
  • granulated sugar
  • ground cinnamon
  • fresh blueberries – or frozen
  • fresh lemon juice
  • butter
  • egg for egg wash
  • Vanilla ice cream – optional

How to Make Blueberry Pie

  1. Pre-heat your oven to 375°F and place a rack in the center position. Lightly oil a 9-inch pie dish.
  2. In a small mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, and cinnamon.
  3. In a large bowl, gently combine the blueberries with the lemon juice. Then add dry ingredients and toss until the blueberries are evenly coated with the mixture. Set aside while you prepare your pie crust.
  4. If you’re using a store-bought crust, follow the package instructions for rolling it out and fitting it into a 9-inch pie pan. For a homemade crust, roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface to fit your pie dish, then gently transfer it to the prepared pie dish.
  5. Pour the blueberry filling into the prepared bottom crust, spreading it out evenly.

6. Spread cubed butter over blueberry pie filling.

7. Cover the pie with a second pie crust, cutting a few slits in the top to allow steam to escape. Crimp the edges to seal the pie.

8. Brush the top crust with the beaten egg to create a beautiful golden sheen during baking. Cover edges with aluminum foil or with a pie crust cover, and then transfer it to the preheated oven.

9. Bake the blueberry pie for 45 to 50 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbly. Remove aluminum foil or crust cover about halfway through baking.

10. Once the pie is done, remove it from the oven. Place on a wire rack and allow to cool for at least one hour before slicing. This allows the filling to set.

11. Serve slices of the classic blueberry pie warm or at room temperature, accompanied by a generous  scoop of vanilla ice cream for the ultimate indulgence.

    Tips for Success

Creating the perfect blueberry pie requires a bit of finesse, but with the proper techniques, anyone can achieve pie perfection. Here are some tips to help you along the way:

    1. Use Fresh Blueberries: While frozen blueberries can certainly be used in a pinch, fresh berries will give your pie the best flavor and texture.
    2. Don’t Skimp on the Crust: A good pie crust is key to a successful blueberry pie. Whether you’re making your own or using a store-bought crust, be sure to handle it gently and avoid overworking the dough.
    3. Let it Cool: As tempting as it may be to dig in right away, allowing your blueberry pie to cool completely before slicing will help the filling set and prevent it from becoming too runny.
    4. Serve with Ice Cream: For the ultimate indulgence, warm your blueberry pie with a scoop of vanilla ice cream—the creamy ice cream pairs perfectly with the warm, fruity filling.

There is nothing like the aroma of a fresh homemade blueberry pie baking in the kitchen. And, there’s nothing quite like a slice of homemade blueberry pie to nourish both body and soul.
