This Instant Pot Salmon Dog Food with Chicken is one of Magnus’s absolute favorites. We keep this recipe on rotation to help balance his diet and ensure he gets a mix of nutrients from different protein sources. And because everything cooks together in the Instant Pot, this homemade salmon dog food is a no-fuss, high-nutrition option that comes together with very little effort.

This batch yields approximately 16-18 cups of homemade dog food, making it a great full meal for large-breed dogs or a nutritious topper on kibble if you’re looking to boost your dog’s bowl. Whichever way you serve it, chances are your pup will love it as much as ours does.

Quick Safety Reminder: When adding fish to your dog’s diet, always double-check for bones, especially in salmon as fish bones can pose a choking risk or cause internal injury.

Ingredients

Ingredients for homemade salmon and chicken dog food on a wooden board.

  • Salmon: 1 pound, which is about 2 fillets. Ensure it’s completely bone-free. I leave the skin on because it offers great nutritional benefits, but if your dog has a sensitive stomach, feel free to remove it.
  • Chicken breasts: boneless, 2 pounds which is generally 2 large breasts.
  • Green beans: I use chopped frozen green beans.
  • Spinach: chopped frozen.
  • Carrots: unpeeled and chopped.
  • Sweet potato: unpeeled and chopped.
  • Brown rice: uncooked.

While the salmon and chicken add protein, the vegetables and rice add needed vitamins, minerals and fiber.

How to Make Instant Pot Salmon Dog Food

  1. Add the rice, vegetables, salmon, chicken, and water to the Instant Pot.
  2. Set to Pressure Cook for 18 minutes, then allow a natural release (about 20-40 minutes).
  3. Once pressure has fully released, open the lid and give everything a good stir, breaking the chicken apart into bite-sized pieces.
  4. If your mixture looks a little soupy, that is ok, the rice will continue to absorb the liquid as it cools.
  5. Cool completely before serving to your pup.

Using an Instant Pot makes it one of the easiest ways to make dog food with salmon and chicken at home. It’s my go-to for making almost all of our Dane’s food.

Benefits of Salmon for Dogs

Salmon is rich in Omega 3 fatty acid and essential minerals that support your dog’s overall health. Some key benefits include; heart health, skin and coat health, supports the immune system, reduces inflammation, and provides joint support
I often am asked where we purchase our salmon. We purchase our salmon from ADLI’s. They have the best pricing and quality from what we have found in our area in New Hampshire.

A Note About Feeding and Supplementation

Great Dane eating from a white bowl labeled "Magnus".

As always, check with your veterinarian when introducing new foods. While all of our dog food recipes have been reviewed with our vet, every dog has unique needs, especially when it comes to food and serving sizes.
For Magnus (our Great Dane): since he is still developing, he is fed three times a day with the morning and evening meal being slightly larger than the noon. That will change as he gets older. And we are currently adding supplementation to ensure he has enough nutrients.

We rotate a variety of homemade meals so Magnus gets different nutrients and seasonal ingredients throughout the year.
