Crispy Air Fryer Tofu
Crispy air fryer tofu is a delicious, easy and healthy way to enjoy tofu that’s been cooked in an air fryer. Once you realize how easy it is to cook tofu in the air fryer, you may never cook it any other way! It cooks in half the time compared to the oven, and is less messy than when cooked on the stovetop or griddle. I’m obsessed with tofu in the air fryer!
The maple syrup in this marinade is key to that caramelized and crispy texture. While you can marinate the tofu in as little as an hour, overnight is best.

Ingredients for Crispy Air Fryer Tofu
- Tofu
- Soy sauce
- Sweet soy sauce
- Maple Syrup
- Rice vinegar
- Sesame oil
- Garlic
- Green onions
How to Air Fry Tofu
Begin by removing all moisture from the tofu. See this post for my fail-safe method of How to Remove Moisture From Tofu. Then cut the tofu into about 1 inch cubes. Next, whisk together all marinade ingredients.
Place tofu in a dish and pour marinade over the tofu.
Marinade for at least 1-4 hours. However, overnight is best. Shake or flip container every so often to distribute the marinade thoroughly.
Place marinated tofu in air fryer basket.
Drain the tofu and save marinade if desired for dipping.
Add marinated tofu to air fryer basket.
Air fry tofu
Air fry at 400 degrees Fahrenheit for 15 minutes. Shake basket halfway through cook time.
Heat saved marinade in small saucepan over medium heat, low simmer for 2-3 minutes. Or microwave in microwave-safe bowl for 1 minute.
Serve and Enjoy!
Serve with dipping sauce or by itself!
Substitutions
Soy sauce – may use coconut aminos or Tamari for gluten free option .
Sweet Soy Sauce – use regular soy sauce, coconut aminos, or tamari. If using regular soy sauce in place of sweet soy sauce, add one additional teaspoon of maple syrup.
Green onions – substitute with fresh chives, or you may omit.
Maple syrup – may use honey or brown sugar.
Garlic – if you do not have fresh garlic, you can substitute with one teaspoon of garlic powder.
FAQ’s
What type of tofu should I use? – Firm or extra-firm tofu is best as it will hold together and have a firm texture. Soft tofu will crumble and not hold the texture.
Can I use other marinades? – Yes!! This is just one of the marinades I use. Use any flavor combo you like. You can also season tofu with herbs and air fry that way.
What to serve with Crispy Air Fryer Tofu? – Honestly, I add this to almost any dish I use tofu for. It’s super convenient to just put the tofu in the air fryer and let it do its thing while I prepare whatever dish I’m serving it with. For example, any rice dish, salad, soup/ramen, as a snack, in a buddha bowl, with a side of bok choy and dipping sauce, and so much more! It holds up really well in Ramen or other soups.

Crispy Air Fryer Tofu
Ingredients
- 1 block Tofu, drained and cubed extra-firm
- ¼ cup Soy sauce
- 1 tbsp Sweet soy sauce
- 1 tbsp Rice vinegar
- 1 tsp Sesame oil
- 3 tbsp Maple Syrup
- 1 tsp garlic, minced
- 2 Green onions, chopped
Instructions
- Whisk together soy sauce through green onions for marinade.
- Place cubed tofu in a container and add marinade. Shake to distribute marinade. Cover and allow to marinate for at least 1 hour – 24 hours, giving the container a shake or flip it every so often to distribute marinade.
- Drain tofu and reserve marinade for use for dipping sauce if desired.
- Air fry tofu at 400℉ for 15 minutes. Shaking basket halfway through cook time.
- While tofu is in air fryer, heat marinade in small saucepan over medium heat, simmer for 2-3 minute and remove from heat.
- Remove tofu from air fryer.
- Serve with dipping sauce or by itself.
